What to Do When You Have a Toothache at Night

First, don't panic

A toothache that wakes you at night is frightening, but it's your body sending a message — not an emergency you have to solve at 2 am. Most night-time toothaches come from decay or an inflamed nerve, and while they need proper treatment soon, there are safe ways to get through the night.

Things you can try tonight

Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water — half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. It soothes the gum and can dislodge trapped food. Gently floss around the painful tooth too; a stuck seed or piece of meat can cause surprising pain.

Take a normal dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet, and keep your head slightly raised with an extra pillow — lying flat increases blood pressure in the area and can make throbbing worse. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food and drinks.

One important warning: never place crushed aspirin or any tablet directly on the gum or tooth. It can burn the tissue and make things worse.

When to call us first thing

If the pain lasts more than a day or two, keeps you awake again, or comes with swelling, fever or a bad taste in your mouth, the tooth needs professional attention — possibly urgently. Swelling around the jaw or eye should never be ignored.

Call or WhatsApp us as soon as we open at 8:30 am and we'll find you a same-day or next-day slot. Mention that you had night pain so our team prioritises you. We're located adjacent to Zenith Bank in Sunyani, open Monday to Saturday.
